EU Parliament takes another small step towards limiting air pollution #EU #AirPollution #Health

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 12.07.47Recently, European Parliament has voted to support actions agains air pollution that ought to take place 2020 – 2030. These decreed directives are being part of National Emissions Ceilings (NEC) program. Such voted thresholds followed proposed guidelines and resulted in assigned specific limits for each EU member as to acceptable amounts of emitted pollutants. Commitments were met with understanding as air pollution problem is the biggest single leading cause of death in the world (WHO, 2012) and only european air pollution-caused health problems alone cost up to €940 (2010).

Unfortunately and surprisingly, despite these positive actions the EU will not support targeting another harmful chemical pollutants.

European Parliament did not support decrees limiting emission even of enteric methane and mercury. This choice met negative comments from European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) as presented in recent press release “the EU Parliament turned its back on the opportunity to save 42,800 additional lives every year from 2025 onwards.”
